The Death of Charity / HR 1388

When the stimulus bill was passed there was a part of it that reduced the deduction some people can take on their income taxes for charitable contributions. If I have my figures right, it will ultimately affect some of the more generous contributors to charities. My first thought was that this would hurt private charities. My second thought was, is this a way for the federal government to eliminate charities so they can eventually take over much of their capital and responsibilities so that the federal government can then dictate what should be spent for where and for what by their new windfall in taxes collected?

With that I let it go for the time being. The being part has now left my mind. There once was another issue I remembered where I let it go for that time being. Again, the being is gone. That issue was when then candidate Obama gave a stump speech about creating a private security force that would be under the control of the federal government. Initially, I decided not to dwell on the thought that this "force" would have military duties yet circumvent our good old law about not allowing the military to police our streets. Now, I think I was wrong for letting that thought be fleeting. I wonder if this is what will become of our America of Change

This is the part of that speech that addresses my once fleeting thought.

I now worry that the HR 1388 bill that has passed through the House but is currently being stalled in the Senate is a way of advancing this ideal of President Obama.

This bill, known by some as the GIVE Act, is dubious in what the politicians sell it as and what it actually implements. It's sold as a good thing since it will encourage volunteering by our youth and does create a national remembrance of 9/11 (which we should have; why can it not be a solo bill without any amendments?). However, this bill also forces people into "volunteering" for specified causes by limiting what can be volunteered for.

How, in the United States of America, do we force someone to do something?

I have always been against a draft. If a draft now expands to social services I will be against that.

AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and similar government entities may not be bad things, but no one should be forced into serving them either. The citizens of America are normally giving people as a whole. That is evident through private charities that not only helped victims of Katrina, but victims of the tsunami in 2007. Our citizens help ourselves, but we also help the world. Limiting what private citizens are willing to do and forcing others into service is not a good ideal. I believe in people helping those in need. As long as they made that choice of their own free will. To investigate more information about this issue please feel free to follow the links below.

It's really sad that everyone must be very vigilant in scrutinizing everything Obama says and does, for fear of ulterior motives that he has for the country. He is all about taking away our individual freedoms, therefore he must be watched like a hawk.
